American President Barack Obama has urged Russian President to make pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine stand down, after violent clashes.
The two leaders discussed the Ukraine crisis in a phone call after the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.
The white house said in a statement; “The president expressed grave concern about Russian government support for the actions of armed, pro-Russian separatists who threaten to undermine and destabilize the government of Ukraine,”.
The statement continued; “The president emphasized that all irregular forces in the country need to lay down their arms, and he urged President Putin to use his influence with these armed, pro-Russian groups to convince them to depart the buildings they have seized.”
It remains to be seen whether the phone call will make any difference to the status quo. However, that is extremely doubtful.
Putin`s arrogance and daring antics have truly exposed how weak western leaders are. They have been crippled with catastrophic indecision and been reduced to making half-hearted appeals from a distance.
I actually do not believe that they [Western leaders] themselves actually believe that the Russian leader will be moved by their appeals and statements of disapproval.
The truth is that there`s very little they can do.
And the sad fact is that Putin knows it and he is exploiting that fact to its fullest extent.
